The October 2nd edition of the Legacy Market News contained important industry updates regarding produce, eggs, dairy, and more. Here are some important takeaways:
CARROT: Supply is steady for now but projections for the near future call for some sizing issues for the front end of the transition in late-October, early-November to the Bakersfield area.
KALE: Bunched kale supplies are expected to be plentiful for the next few weeks. Now is a good opportunity for promoting product.
LETTUCE: Supplies continue to be lighter than normal due to light yields on both cartons and pounds. Quality is still medium, and we are keeping it as fresh as possible due to shorter-than-normal shelf life. The market has been extremely tight, and supplies continue to be low; with the lower demand the market should adjust lower.
CANTALOUPE: Cantaloupe quality is showing typical characteristics of the fall season. Melons will not be showing as much color and will mostly likely appear lighter green. Internal quality has remained consistent in the 12-13% range which is a positive characteristic of the seed varieties used during this time of year.
PEPPERS: Green bell production will be light this week and next week. Quality will be good, and we are breaking into new fields off of the central coast. Still, believe the market will be active.
